Post 10C - Alex
I think the man needs consequence for selling the marijuana, as well as walking away from his 10 year sentence only six months in. However, what would society gain by sending this man back to prison? As a model citizen well into his fifties he has, more than, proved he is not a risk for further illegal behavior. Wouldn’t everyone be better served by this mans sentence being changed to some type of community service? His hours could be spent teaching a drug prevention education program in schools, community centers, etc. I think this idea fits into Kohlberg’s Postconventional Reasoning Stage 5.

I really like your idea of him doing community service. While the man did do a bad act, he has learned from it and what better what to improve your life than by helping others. This way the mans story is not wasted in prison and may actually help people who could go down the same path as him.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that he has proved he is not at risk for illegal behavior. I think that if he did a drug prevention program it would help the community more then sending him back to prison.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the man has proven himself to be a good person. Everyone messes up sometimes especially when they are young and haven't quite learned all the important lessons in life. I feel like 10 years for marijuana is a harsh punishment in the first place. Sending him back to prison wouldn't help anyone, he would be much better off informing others of the things he had to learn the hard way. I also wonder who allowed him to walk away in the first place after only 6 months?
ReplyDeleteI agree that society really won't gain a whole lot by sending him to prison. It would be more realistic for him to do something more productive and meaningful like community service. That could be doing talks and presentations about drug abuse and risks at local schools. Society would gain more by having him do community service.
