I think that the ultimate goal of NCLB would have been great if they could have found another way to go about it. I don't think holding other students back from learning things just because one or two students in their class aren't doing as well is working against the end goal of NCLB. To help all students master the curriculum I think there should be a short test given two times a quarter to see where each child is and to help teachers reevaluate what styles of teaching they may need to use. If the same child continues to school significantly lower than the rest of the class than I think an aid for that student should be brought in to help the child do better. Once an aid is brought in and the child is getting extra attention there is no reason that he/she should not improve on these tests.

  1. i agree. it isn't fair to the students who are doing the work and don't need the extra help to get punished. i feel that the students who need the help may not be getting it because is being looked at as a whole.

I really like your idea. I think giving those tests would be a great way for teachers to see where their students are. Ultimately, it is the teachers who need to be aware of what their students are and are not capable of because they are the ones responsible for getting them caught up.

  3. I completely agree with everything each of you is saying. I believe that some kind of program is needed to help our kids in school because it is obvious they need it. I also agree that the ultimate goal is a good idea. Staci's idea is a good proposition. And Haley, it IS the teacher's responsiblity to keep track of where their student's are because they are the ones who spend the most time with them and can see where they are struggling. If a child is not getting the material the teacher needs to look at themselves to see if they can change something to make it better.

  4. Having worked as a para for several school districts, I can tell you hiring an aide for every student who is lagging behind will probably not be feasable. Districts are very reluctant to spend the money unless the child is diagnosed with a learning disability. Classroom paras in special education will work with many children during the day, but they all have to be special ed students.

  5. I like this idea because it gives constant feedback on how students are doing and gets them help if they need it. Too often struggling kids are ignored and help comes too late.
