Please respond to the following:

What can be done to convince women who are pregnant not to smoke or drink? Consider the role of health-care providers, the role of insurance companies, and specific programs targeted at women who are pregnant.

  1. I believe there should be a cooridinated effort by the insurance companies and the health care providers in educating pregnant women. Maybe an education class about the dangers of drinking and smoking has on a developing fetus. Maybe set up on the first visit to confirm pregnacy with a Dr. Although many women know they should not do either, have they been fully educated on the impact these two habits have on a developing embyo and fetus. More information about the risks may persude some to quit. Insurance companies should pay for this class.

  2. That is a really good idea. Before you leave the hospital you have to learn how to put your child in a car seat properly, so why can't they make some class that they have to take to make sure they know. It is a good thought to have the insurance companies pay for it because then more people would be willing to go.

  3. I personally think it would be good to look at pictures and videos of children with fetal alcohol syndrome or mothers who smoked while they were pregnant. Also I think it would be good that if along with the education class Kathy talked about have mothers come in who smoked and drank while they were pregnant to talk about their experience and regrets.

  4. I think there should be more done to stress the risks of women smoking and drinking while pregnant. If there is not some kind of action taken that results in a punishment, women will continue to do it even when they know they shouldn't. My sister in law is currently pregnant with her second child and is still smoking. She has already had complications with this pregnancy and I would feel like she would try to eliminate any possible reasons for there to be any issues, but she hasn't. More should be done by law makers and health care workers to help eliminate this issue.

  5. There are several things that can be done to convince women to stop smoking and drinking while pregnant. For one, the insurance companies can refuse to cover any medical bills for women during their pregnancy if the doctors see's any sign of the woman possible using these substances. Also, when woman first find out about their pregnancy doctors can show a film describing the damages that can be done to their unborn child if a women decides to smoke or drink while pregnant. These videos can be targeted for the different trimesters as well.

  6. In reply to Kathy,
I like the idea of insurance companies paying for women to attend a session on the affects that their actions can have on their child. Showing pictures and also helping them to understand the actions they will have to take once the child is born to help keep them healthy may open up a few woman's eyes to the risks that they are taking
