No it would not be a good idea for parents to use flashcards to teach language to their child because when children are first learning to speak they are imitating words that their parents say to them. They learn through imitation of the sounds that eventually turn into words and then sentences. By putting flashcards in their faces they are just looking at the words on the cards but do not know what the words mean because they cannot read yet. Piaget would disagree with this activity because he believes that children learn from experiences of trial and error, such as practicing the words that their parents are saying to them. Deferred imitation is a good example that he would use of the children imitating their parents.

  1. I agree that children learn by imitation, but I also think flashcards could work too. If the parent say the flashcard out loud the child would hear the word and maybe start to recognize it on the card.

  2. Courtney,

I agree that flashcards would not be a good way to teach infants language. Infants learn language from hearing others talk. I don't think Piaget would like this idea either. I think parents should just trust that their children will speak when they are ready to and not rush things to much.

  3. I think hearing the words pronounced and placing that sound with the word makes a connection called language. If flash cards alone could work why do deaf children have such a hard time with repeating sounds and with phonics. Why can they not just learn from flash cards.
