Post 5--B

I think it would be alright if a parent used flash cards with their baby. I know it is probably not going to work, but I think if you keep doing something over and over they will finally understand. It is really working with the child. Saying the word out loud and repeating is key. I do not think Piaget would agree with the flashcards because he believes in the child learning on their own by doing it and either succeeding or failing.

  1. I don't agree that flash cards should be used to teach infants language. They learn through hearing others speak and making words on their own. I do agree that repeating words to teach an infant language could be helpful but I don't think flash cards would be needed.

  2. I have seen this flashcard example on TV and they do make it seem appealing. I think even if a baby could learn the words they won't have made the connections to the real objects so it would really be meaningless.

Some parents will try anything to have the "smart baby." I am not a fan of teaching a baby sign language either. I work at a gym where I have watched lots of kids from the time they are 6 months old until 2 or 3 years old. I find the ones that have been taught sign language are speech delayed and show more agression toward their peers because they cannot communicate in a way their peers understand. However, their parents are like "look at Billy, he is so smart, he knows sign language." I think it would be the same way with this. Ya they seem smart but you have affected their developement in another way by doing it.

  3. I don't believe that this would help the child learn how to speak a language, but I do think if someone chose to present flashcards in front of the infant, that infant may have an easier time reading in the future.

  4. I agree with Alex. If you "keep doing the same thing over and over again" the child will just be using memorization to read or recognize the word without actually grasping what it means or represents. It is better to not try to mess with the natural method of learning just to have as he said "the smart baby".

  5. I this it is memorization but they are learning a language, and can also be associated with the actual object.
